1960's: Birmingham Church Bombing

Four little girls were killed in Birmingham, Alabama when Klu Klux Klan members dynamited the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on a Sunday morning as the children prepared for Youth Sunday services.

This terrorist bombing, less than three weeks after the March on Washington, riveted the country’s attention–and led to passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

    1. Another thing is that two more Negro youth were killed 7 hours later in outbreaks of shooting because of the bombing. A third was injured.

  5. It is depressing for children at a church to die in the hands of evil people.

  6. I think its sad and just wrong that the people who were responsible would actually bomb a church and kill 4 little girls.

  7. Children should not be afraid to go to church, church should be a place of safety and comfort.

    1. I agree Jon. children should be able to go to church. once the whites start bombing churches its like finding a loop hole in the constitution. we have freedom of religion but when we cant go anymore its basically taking away their religion. >:(

    2. Or straining their faith in order for God to test their faith. It still isn't right, even today people are afraid that some lunatic will come in the churches and start shooting up the place. Schools are getting shot up all over the nation so I just think that churches will be next on the list because that is where we are most vulnerable!

  8. I had no idea that this happened! This is so wrong, on so many levels! How could someone do something like this!? I wonder if the person(s) who set the bomb ever got caught? I tried to look it up, but couldn't find anything. It's so sad.... :(
